By: Tom Golebiewski, Ph.D., L.C.S.W. Social Work Consultant at Wolcott School; Adjunct Instructor, Northwestern University, Master’s Of Science in Education Program
The Tyree Institute at Wolcott School and Northwestern University will hold an inaugural conference on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at the Wolcott School, 545 N. Wolcott Ave, Chicago on April 27, 2018.
The title, Every Classroom, Every Day, guided the design of the conference to provide workshops that are applicable, experiential and relevant to curriculum, instruction and practice. The conference advances the integration of social emotional learning to demonstrate and highlight connection between skills, while building capacities.
Keynote presenters will provide an overview of SEL and Restorative Justice while each workshop illustrates activities, approaches and resources that may inspire new and innovative ways to integrate SEL in learning and schools.
The program provides varied and multiple pathways for learning. The various sessions will explore topical strands such as mindfulness, restorative justice community circles, and play. Demonstrations will be practice oriented. Teachers from various disciplines and content areas will provide a foundation and framework that illustrates and integrates SEL practices in the classroom. The day will provide opportunities for networking, collaboration and potentially new relationships and resources.
The goals and objectives of this conference are to integrate through demonstration and discussion by classroom teachers’ curriculum and instructional practices used explicitly and intentionally in their classrooms; to innovate through experiential activities that use mindfulness, play, community circles/restorative justice practices, and techniques that emphasize skills and a growth mindset. Through this inaugural workshop we hope to inspire a community of partners committed to advancing SEL development in schools.
